Thyroid Health

Your thyroid is a small but mighty gland.  It plays a role in every single organ system in the body.  Most doctors only run a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), but your thyroid is more than just a TSH.  As Naturopathic Doctors, we take a comprehensive look at the thyroid, adrenals and your hormones to make sure your body is working together as a whole.  Some symptoms of thyroid dysfunction include:

  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Cycle irregularities
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety
  • Brittle nails
  • Hair loss

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Naturopathic Doctors Treat Thyroid Disorders?

Yes, in the state of Arizona, ND's are licensed and able to diagnose, prescribe and/or renew thyroid medication if indicated and necessary.

I Thought I Needed an Endocrinologist If I Have or Suspect a Thyroid Disorder?

No, not necessarily.  As ND's, we are trained in endocrinology and can help treat thyroid disorders.  Sometimes referrals are necessary for initial diagnosis of Grave's disease or hyperthyroidism as additional testing and scans are needed that is not within the scope of Naturopathic Doctors.

What Is Your Preferred Treatment For Thyroid Disorders?

It depends!  We look at the whole body so it could be as simple as adding in nutrients, working on gut health or lifestyle, but sometimes medication is indicated and necessary.

What If I Have A Thyroid Disorder--Will I Need To Be On Medication Forever?

It depends!  Sometimes when we give the body what it needs it can heal itself.  It also depends on how long the thyroid dysfunction has gone on for and/or how affected it is.

Can You Refill Or Prescribe Medications If Necessary?

Yes, Dr. Ellis is able to prescribe medications in Arizona.
